The construction industry is constantly changing, with rapid advancements in engineering, technology, new energy sources, and a stronger focus on the environment. J.M. Thompson Company’s longevity is evidence of our ability to change with the times. Nevertheless, we remain deeply committed to the values instilled in us by the company founders, our grandfather, and father, of treating others as we would have them treat us.
John Thompson
President / CEO
JMT is owned and operated by John, Dickie, and Marty Thompson, brothers who represent the third generation of a family business. Each brother has vast construction knowledge, having begun their careers in the field, moving into project management before assuming hands-on, executive roles. The JMT team is comprised of some of the most experienced professionals in the industry; a company is only as good as the people it employs, and our staff is responsible for the many successful projects represented in our portfolio.
The JMT team believes in the importance of each and every relationship, from our employees to our clients, and everyone we meet along the way.
That’s why every completed project has one of our principal partners involved from start to finish. We say, “A Thompson will be on every project.” Whether it’s John, Dickie, Marty, or Travis, the long-standing trust we build on job sites with our clients, staff, and subcontractors are second to none in the industry. Headquartered in Cary, NC, JMT is a licensed general contractor in both North and South Carolina. We’ve completed a wide range of projects across the Southeast ranging from industrial and manufacturing facilities to convention centers and high-rise condominiums, delivering quality work at a competitive price.

For nearly 100 years, building owners and industry professionals have chosen JMT, not only because we provide quality work at a fair price, but because we prove time and time again that commitment and hard work deliver successful projects.
Mr. Thompson, a machinist by trade, moved to Raleigh from Bahama, NC to begin work with Dillon Supply Company. Prior to starting work with his new employer, Mr. Thompson, amid completing a new home for his young family, was offered an attractive price for his home. Impressed by Mr. Thompson’s home design and attention to detail, the buyer accidentally planted a seed in John’s mind. Realizing the potential for a career in construction, Mr. Thompson began J.M. Thompson Company from small beginnings, and eventually, grew to become one of Raleigh’s largest homebuilders. In growing his company, Mr. Thompson established a reputation for quality, craftsmanship and customer service.
After serving as a pilot in World War II, Marvin Thompson’s oldest son, Hal Alexander Thompson returned to Raleigh and joined the construction business with his father. After much persuasion, Hal convinced his father to bid on commercial projects and JMT underwent a transformation, transitioning from residential to commercial, industrial, and institutional work within a few years. Through Hal’s exceptional leadership, the company expanded its work area throughout the state of North Carolina and gained a reputation for its high-quality work and experienced construction professionals.
Hal Thompson becomes president of JMT.
In the late 1970’s, Hal’s sons graduated from engineering school and joined the business. John, Dickie, and Marty Thompson have grown up in construction and use a hands-on approach to operate the business, staying actively involved in the management of each project. All the brothers embrace the values their grandfather and father instilled in them: Quality construction and fair treatment of every person you meet.
Now, JMT continues to be a family-owned and operated business in Cary, NC. The company is run by third generation brothers John, Dickie, and Marty, and now fourth generation Travis.
JMT will celebrate 100 years of providing excellent, quality construction services.
