The construction industry is constantly changing, with rapid advancements in engineering, technology, new energy sources, and a stronger focus on the environment. J.M. Thompson Company’s longevity is evidence by our ability to change with the times. Nevertheless, we remain deeply committed to the values instilled in us by the company founders, our grandfather and father, of treating others as we would have them treat us.

John Marvin Thompson, a machinist by trade, moved to Raleigh from Bahama, North Carolina to work for Dillion Supply Company. Prior to him beginning work under his new employer, Mr. Thompson finished completing a new home for his young family. He was then offered an attractive price for his home by a buyer who admired the home's design and attention to detail. The praise from the buyer planted a seed in Mr. Thompson’s mind. Realizing the potential for a career in construction, Mr. Thompson began J.M. Thompson Company. From humble beginnings, it eventually grew to become one of Raleigh’s largest homebuilders. In growing his company, Mr. Thompson established a reputation for quality, craftsmanship, and customer service.
After serving as a pilot in World War II, Hal Alexander Thompson, Mr. Thompson’s eldest son, returned to Raleigh and joined the family construction business. After much persuasion, Hal convinced his father to pursue commercial projects. Because of this decision, JMT underwent a transformation by switching from residential to commercial, industrial, and institutional work within a few years. Through Hal’s exceptional leadership, the company expanded its work area throughout the state of North Carolina. JMT gained a positive reputation for its high-quality work and experienced construction professionals.
After over thirty years of growing and leading JMT, John Marvin Thompson passed away at the age of 63. Hal Thompson became president of JMT after his father’s death.
In the late 1970s, Hal’s sons graduated from engineering school and joined the family business. Having grown up in construction, John, Dickie, and Marty Thompson use a hands-on approach to operate the business. They stay heavily involved in the management of each project. All the brothers embody the values their grandfather and father passed down to them. Two of their core values are to provide quality construction and to always apply fair treatment to every person they meet.
JMT continues to be a family-owned and operated business in Cary, NC. The company is run by the third generation of brothers John, Dickie, and Marty. Most recently, the fourth generation has joined the company: Travis Thompson, Dickie's son, and Paul Thompson, John's son.
JMT celebrates 100 years of providing excellent, quality construction services to their clients.
