North Carolina General Contractor FAQs

At J.M. Thompson (JMT), we offer a full range of design-build, pre-construction, construction management, and general contracting solutions. Find answers to our clients’ most frequently asked questions below.

Does JMT Have a License?

We have general contracting licenses in North Carolina and South Carolina. Under the North Carolina Licensing Board for General Contractors, we hold license #474 with unlimited status and building and highway classifications.

How Long Has JMT Been in Business?

Founded by John Marvin Thompson in 1921, JMT has nearly a century of history in North Carolina’s construction industry. We’ve been a family-owned and -operated business since our founding.

What Locations Does JMT Serve?

We can work in North Carolina and South Carolina, the two states where we have general contracting licenses. Located in Cary, NC, we mainly work with clients in North Carolina, but we can arrange some projects for South Carolina clients. Many of our projects take place in the Research Triangle region of North Carolina.

Who Will Work on My Project?

A member of the Thompson family, some of the most experienced professionals in general contracting, will partner with you on your contract. We will work with our network of subcontractors to deliver the services needed to exceed your project goals.

What Delivery Methods Does JMT Use?

We use two delivery methods for our services:

What Pre-Construction Services Does JMT Offer?

Our pre-construction services include:

  • Budgeting and bidding for multiple delivery methods.
  • Constructability and design reviews.
  • Subcontractor engagement and pre-qualification.
  • Logistics planning.
  • Scheduling.
  • Value management.
  • Safety assessments.

Does JMT Charge a Fee for Pre-Construction Services?

At JMT, we consider pre-construction services an investment in our client relationships and projects. We perform many budgets and bid projects at no cost to the client. However, with some project delivery models, we will need to allocate a fee due to a broader project scope or extended time frame. In these cases, we always stipulate the extra cost ahead of time in a contract.

Does JMT Offer Design Services?

JMT offers design-build services that involve partnerships with subcontracted designers. Instead of performing in-house design, we work with a vast network of experienced designers who specialize in multiple project types. We will match you with a hand-picked design partner with expertise in the engineering you require. Your JMT design-build team will also include project managers, superintendents, and estimators who will review every aspect of your project for constructability, materials, and trade coordination.

How Can JMT Meet My Project Budget?

Our team knows that effective cost control begins at a construction project’s conception. We have decades of experience in cost estimation that allow us to anticipate a project’s less obvious expenses and control them in advance. Our proactive approach to project planning accounts for variables as early in the process as possible so we can address them before they become more costly.
